HAND BLOCK PRINT COTTONS FROM JAIPUR
Hand block printing on fine cotton fabric has continued for hundreds of years in Jaipur, Rajasthan in home workshops using natural dyes. Hereditary carvers, mostly fathers and sons chisel designs traced onto teak wood blocks and families of printers then precisely print the designs by dipping the blocks into natural colour dyes and stamp them onto lengths of cotton stretched onto long tables. For Opium, the beautiful hand blocked fabrics are made into cushions, bed covers and garden parasols.
HAND APPLIQUE & KANTHA STITCH WORK
Cotton applique work has its origins in Barmer, Rajasthan as a desert culture tradition. Cushions, bed covers and curtains are created in beautiful cutwork designs hand appliqued onto calico cotton or an organdy sheer fabric. Geometric and tree of life designs are equally popular and make beautiful cushions, bed covers and curtains.
Kantha stitch work is a tradition of West Bengal for many hundreds of years. Embroidered designs are created using a simple running stitch.
