Antique Thakat Coffee Tables

Our Antique Coffee Tables all originally started life as day beds in India, traditionally used either to sit on or to take an afternoon siesta. Made from teak, acacia or rohida woods, craftsmen were commissioned to make the more intricately carved pieces for Temples, Maharajas and wealthy Merchants. In the more Tribal areas, day bed tables in a more naively carved style were made as part of a marriage dowry.

These antique pieces are sourced mainly from the Thar Desert and Shekawati in Rajasthan, Saurashtra and Bhuj in Gujarat and Nagaland in North Eastern India (land of the snakes), where furniture is always constructed from a single piece of wood. From the South of India we source day bed tables in jackfruit wood and beautiful Kattil day bed tables with red lacquer legs. All our tables date from early 19th century to early 20th century.
